The 2025 Masters snooker tournament gets underway at Alexandra Palace this weekend. Ronnie O’Sullivan, arguably the greatest of all time, heads to the English capital as the defending champion. Can anyone stop “The Rocket” from retaining his Masters crown?

The Ally Pally Title Contenders

The 51^st edition of the Masters gets underway this Sunday. O’Sullivan is in action on day one, facing the equally experienced John Higgins in round one. The defending champion is fancied to win his opening match and has been tipped to go far.

Judd Trump is the current favourite, with “The Ace in the Pack” priced at 4.00. Trump is a two-time Masters champion, lifting the trophy in 2019 and 2023. The 35-year-old starts his tournament with a matchup against Barry Hawkins.

The likes of Kyren Wilson and Mark Selby are also in the mix. Wilson won the world championship in 2024 and is looking for a big year. So far this season, “The Warrior” has won the Xi’an Grand Prix and the Northern Ireland Open. The current world champion is the third favourite at 6.50.

Selby, a four-time world champion, won the British Open in September and could be one to watch at Ally Pally. Trump, O’Sullivan, and Wilson may be ahead of “The Jester from Leicester” in the betting, but Selby is a world-beater on his day.

Will O’Sullivan Retain His Crown?

O’Sullivan got the better of old rival Ali Carter in last year’s final, winning 10-7. It was Ronnie’s eighth Masters crown, pulling him two ahead of Stephen Hendry on the all-time list.

Even though he will turn 50 this year, O’Sullivan remains the man to beat. Since turning professional in 1992, “The Rocket” has won a staggering 41 ranking tournaments and has been crowned world champion seven times.

O’Sullivan has yet to win a tournament this season, but we are backing the Wordsley-born star to win the 2025 Masters at odds of 4.30.

As for an outsider bet, we like the look of Mark Williams at 17.00. The veteran Welshman won the Champion of Champions tournament in Bolton in November and is a Triple Crown winner. Williams could be worth having a punt on at those generous odds.
