The Tournament Contenders

With the Open Championship on the horizon, the world’s best golfers will have one eye on the major event in Northern Ireland. However, before the PGA Tour heads to the UK, the John Deere Classic takes centre stage in Illinois this week.

The inaugural event, named the Quad Cities Open Invitational, took place back in 1971. Deane Beman prevailed, beating Dow Finsterwald by 2 strokes. A host of top names have won this tournament over the following decades, including Steve Stricker, Vijay Singh, and Jordan Spieth.

Davis Thompson won the 2024 version, beating Luke Clanton, Pan Cheng-tsung, and Michael Thorbjornsen by 4 strokes in a dominant display. Thompson is defending his crown this year, priced at 31.00 to win again.

Ben Griffin is the bookmakers’ favourite to win the 2025 John Deere Classic. The 29-year-old is in good form, recently winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans (with Andrew Novak), and the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Griffin is available at 17.00 to pick up his third PGA Tour victory of the season. Many punters will be backing the current world No. 17.

Denny McCarthy is next on the list at 21.00. The 32-year-old American has yet to win on the PGA Tour, but can he spring a surprise in Silvis?

Jason Day and Thorbjornsen are both available at 29.00. Day is gunning for his first PGA Tour victory since the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson. As for Thorbjornsen, he was a runner-up in last year’s John Deere Classic.

Other notable mentions are J.T. Poston, Kevin Yu (both 29.00), Adrich Potgieter, and Ryan Gerard (both 31.00). Also, Kim Si-woo has caught the eye at 33.00.

The betting for this year’s John Deere Classic is wide open. Can a familiar face come out on top, or will a new name be etched onto the trophy?

Can Griffin Live Up to Favourite Tag?

Griffin is having a breakthrough season on the PGA Tour. After picking up his first win with teammate Novak in Louisiana in April, he followed it up by winning May’s Charles Schwab Classic.

Griffin is in tip-top shape, and backing the 29-year-old to lift the trophy at TPC Deere Run could be a smart choice. Even though Griffin is the favourite, 17.00 is still a solid price.

In terms of a top-five finish, we like the look of Poston at 7.00. “The Postman” won the 2022 edition, scoring 263 to finish 3 strokes clear of Christian Bezuidenhout and Emiliano Grillo. The 2024 Shriners Children’s Open champion is looking to rekindle his form in Illinois.
